Tiffany Chandelier Restorations
Ultra Diamonds (Historic Former C.D. Peacock Store) - Chicago, IL

Amazingly, the ceiling and chandelier restorations were performed in such a way that Ultra Diamonds could remain open during the entire restoration and, of course, the Christmas shopping season.

The chandeliers were not removed until temporary light fixtures were installed to adequately light the store was put up underneath the scaffolding.

The chandeliers were not removed until temporary light fixtures were installed to adequately light the store was put up underneath the scaffolding.
The opening sizes in the scaffolding deck were made as large as possible as determined by the scaffold’s framework. But they were not large enough to permit the tops of the chandeliers to pass through. Therefore, the chandeliers could not be lowered until the crowns were removed and the crowns could not be removed until the crystal was removed.
This meant that the crystal had to be removed through the openings in the scaffolding by having one person above the scaffolding and one below the scaffolding.
Further complicating the crystal removal was the fact that being an older building, the doorways were too small to get a lift into the space. This meant that the crystal would have to removed, and later reinstalled by working on ladders instead of a platform.
Because of the small doorways, the chandeliers had to be partially disassembled in the store in order to remove them for restoration. It also meant that final reassembly would also have to take place in the store.
